WE ARE BACK. That’s right. After months off, yours at The Sci-Fi Podcast have opened their cryochambers and have begun to thaw. With the first 50 episodes (and numerous unnumbered episodes to boot) released, it was time to end season one and head into season two. This is episode five.

2019 is shaping up to be an incredible year for television and movies. We’ve experienced the end of the Marvel Infinity Saga, we’ll see the undoubtedly emotional close to the Skywalker Saga, Alien turned 40 and much, much more. In this episode we discuss the return of two storied franchises: Star Trek and Terminator.

Seventeen years after the final film in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, Jean-Luc Picard returns in Star Trek: Picard, on CBS All Access. At this time we have very little to go on, but a newly released trailer has ignited the flames of deep space nerdness and you better believe your hosts are all about it.

Terminator made a fairly milquetoast comeback in 2015 with Terminator: Genisys. Arnie made his return as the titular character but sadly that wasn’t enough for fans to rally for, and the franchise appeared to be doomed. But! James Cameron wasn’t about to let that happen. Later this year we’ll welcome the return of Sarah Connor and the Terminator, and the buzz is certainly buzzing.

SLC Gaming Con 2018. As with Alien Con, Mattroid is once again out in the field and left to his own devices–never a good sign! Not dissimilar to Comic Con or FanX, Gaming Con embraces nerds, geeks, and particularly gamers of all kinds; throw in vendor booths, panels, and competitive gaming (including collegiate e-sports!).

ALIEN CON: 2018, Pasadena, California. With Solo and Station! unable to attend, Mattroid braves the wonderful and weird outer-space inspired convention alone. The audio quality suffers quite badly in some places (so sorry!) but the content is incredible and, especially in conjunction with the pictures below, you’ll get a pretty good idea of the goings-on at Alien Con.

Getting back to the roots of the show, Mattroid, Solo, and Station decide to once again visit the exquisitely awful Jupiter Ascending, and this time you get to join in on the fun from your very own couch! Special guest Maddy Triggs weighs in on her thoughts on the movie, life, and a thousand other subjects as the gang struggle to pay attention to the space train-wreck brought to us by the Wachowski Siblings. When we think of comics, the X-Men are up at the top of the list that comes to mind. We conjure images of a berserker Wolverine, Cyclops’ optic blast, a torrential Storm, and of course Jean Grey and the Phoenix. We think of these characters, and we thank Chris Claremont for bringing them to us as never before, and for creating some of the greatest superheroes since their inception.

With Chris Claremont’s X-Men we learn about the franchise and how Claremont came to spearhead a new direction for the team, taking the fabled mutants from whatever to nothing better. While the documentary might suffer from some unfortunate production issues, the material is wonderful. Check it out and let us know your thoughts in the comments section. Every now and then a terrible sci-fi movie comes out and stuns audiences for years; sometimes a sci-fi movie comes out and polarizes audiences, leaving some dumbfounded while others are awe-struck; sometimes these movies become cult-classics and other times they are buried at the bottom of the dollar-bin at your local superstore.

Here we’ve got movies that reflect on Earth in the distant future; how things may be different, may be the same, or may be kooky as hell with weird things going on for no apparent reason. Have you ever wondered about the origins of the Alien Abduction sub-genre in cinema? Episode 116 of HORROR MOVIE PODCAST was Part 1 in a crossover with your loyal hosts here at The Sci-Fi Podcast. On that ep, the HMP hosts and special guest Mattroid, from TSFP, spent some time exploring the theme and reviewed the films Alien Abduction (2014) as well as Altered (2006). We capped off Part 1 with an excellent interview with filmmaker Eduardo Sanchez.

Part 2 of that series is now here! In this episode, HMP co-hosts Dr. Shock (known as Dave Bowman on TSFP) and Wolfman Josh (known as SpaceWolf on TSFP) join the crew of The Sci-Fi Podcast to review the creepy Communion (1989) and Fire in the Sky (1993).

Mattroid, now joined by the other TSFP co-hosts, continue the epic discussion of Alien Abduction, remembering classic movies in the genre, exploring the trope that is Alien Abduction, and utilizing our resident scientist–The Brain–as a sounding board for our hypotheses regarding the probability and plausibility of life OUT THERE and that life coming here. Mattroid and Brain discuss the recently released Life (2017) and whether or not it’ll improve or make your own life worse for watching it.

And later in the show, the two are joined by Station! and baby Ripley for a hilarious detailing of the movie Displacement (2016) and discover that the movie is tied to a very provocative cable network.
