The Sci-Fi Podcast – Episode 50: Listen Along! Stupider Ascending

Welcome to The SciFi Podcast, a wretched hive of scum and villainy a bi-weekly podcast focused on in-depth discussion of all things science fiction. The SciFi Podcast features three hosts—Mattroid, Solo, and Station!—and frequent guests. Each episode we look at a science fiction theme or franchise and take the discussion where no show has gone before.

It’s here. Episode 50. And only a year or two late.

Getting back to the roots of the show, Mattroid, Solo, and Station decide to once again visit the exquisitely awful Jupiter Ascending, and this time you get to join in on the fun from your very own couch! Special guest Maddy Triggs weighs in on her thoughts on the movie, life, and a thousand other subjects as the gang struggle to pay attention to the space train-wreck brought to us by the Wachowski Siblings. How much do love hating this movie? Or do you hate that you love it? Head to the comments section and let us know.

Theme music courtesy of i hear sirens, featuring Matt on bass and Liz on keyboard. Hear more of i hear sirens ethereal, instrumental, post-rock at BandCamp. Podcast production by William Solo Jr. Artwork by Mattroid.

Show Notes:

William worked really hard on this production. The edits were abysmally difficult, the swears plentiful, the content barely salvageable, and the number of tracks numerous. Yet it sounds great. Find out more about William’s wonderful project The Villa and tell your friends do to the same.

The Magic Word will get you a SCI-Fi tee!

Thank you for joining us for 50 episodes and many extras over the past few years. We love and appreciate each of you.

  1. This is a comment for the sake of giving this episode thread a comment.

Also, Solo is right, at least in my case. I haven’t listened to this episode yet since it claims to be another episode for Jupiter Ascending.

  3. Hey guys came across from movie podcast weekly and wasn’t going to listen to this episode because….well Jupiter ascending say no more . Just wanted to say thanks it was great listening to you guys (still didn’t watch the movie again though lol )

  4. A month after hearing that this episode wasn’t just a live commentary on Jupiter Ascending, I finally got around to listening to it all.

Considering I listened to the Movie Moments Podcast with Maddy prior to listening to this episode, I think it’s oddly fascinating that in both episodes, the term, “Gigolo” was brought up. In all of the episodes of the various MPN podcasts that I’ve listened to, I’m 99% sure that the only episodes that featured that term were these two. I’m now absurdly curious if Maddy somehow (And without realizing this random bit of trivia) brings up the term again the next time she’s on an episode of one of the MPN podcasts.

I feel like Matt and Station dropped the ball on not answering a follow-up question when Maddy discussed her habit of writing nasty letters to people who annoys her, before destroying them. Immediately, my mind went to wondering whether or not she had written any such letters to Solo during the filming of The Villa. haha

I should be embarrassed by this, but I was really proud of myself for instantly knowing that John De Lancie played Q. I concur with Matt that Q was always the best part about Star Trek: TNG.

Jupiter Ascending is still not a movie I’ve seen and the more I hear about it, the less I care to see it. This episode was far more entertaining with its randomness than had you guys tried to actually do a serious live commentary on it.

Even though Redmayne won his Oscar a few weeks after Jupiter Ascending came out, I wonder if he had a good idea that his performance in The Theory of Everything would be widely praise to the point where he knew he could experiment and do whatever the hell he wanted to do with this weird talking character in Jupiter Ascending. The guy just won an Oscar, it makes him bulletproof. Any flaws in the Jupiter Ascending performance would be more likely to be blamed on the directors guidance since Redmayne just proved that he is a great actor. However, if the performance had worked out, despite its wackiness, Redmayne would be touted as a hero for his ability to deliver despite the shit. It has to be a great spot for an actor to be in. Knowing that due to his past accomplishments, you’ve got a certain amount of time knowing that no one can blame you regardless of how shit you are.

Super late on this, but congrats on 50(+) episodes of The Sci-Fi Podcast.
