THE SCI_FI PODCAST EP 24: The Predator Franchise Part 2 – Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010)

tsfp-predator-franchise-part-2Welcome to The SciFi Podcasta wretched hive of scum and villainy a bi-weekly podcast focused on in-depth discussion of all things Science Fiction. The SciFi Podcast features three hosts—Mattroid, Solo, Brain, and Station!—and frequent guests. Each episode we look at a science fiction theme or franchise and take the discussion where no show has gone before.

Sequels! A bizarro follow up to the iconic Predator, Predator 2 departs from the norm to deliver us action on top of sloppy social commentary. Is it terrible? Terrific? Does it compare to the third, Predators, wherein we find ourselves tailored well and suited up to be a true sequel to the original? If it bleeds, kill it in the comments section, below.

  1. I’ve only seen Predators once several years ago. I remember liking the movie, but I was surprised at the 9/10 ratings across the board. Maybe it’s time for me to revisit this one. Also, Mattroid, great mention of the parallel between Predator/Predators and Alien/Aliens. Almost makes me wish Predator 2 didn’t happen, although, confession time, I actually like that steaming circle of trash. I’m sure it’s just nostalgia glasses, though.

Awesome episode. I loved this Predator mini-series of episodes.

  2. Thanks Dino. It was fun to finally cover the Predator movies. I’m excited for the next one, as far off as it may be.

And although I think continuity might be a bit better had predator 2 never been made, I love it. And who knows what Shane Black’s will bring; could be that the 2nd ties in more, fits in, or (hopefully) it continues to stand out like a single can of Orange Crush on shelf filled with Sprite. Or something.

  4. I’m a huge fan of Predator 2. I really enjoyed this podcast. You guys managed to describe exactly why it is so special to me. I actually met Bill Paxton about a month before he died and told him it was my favorite movie of all time. In response he told me it was probably his least favorite movie of all time… But anyhow, just wanted to mention, I know you guys were laughing about the question someone had about it being based on a book. In fact it was! It’s heavily based on the original Predator Dark Horse comic series. Whole scenes and direct quotes from Predator 2 come straight out of that book. Although it takes place in NYC and the main cop is supposed to be Dutch’s twin brother. It was later novelized as “Predator: Concrete Jungle”.
