The Sci-Fi Podcast – S2E5: Jean- Luc Picard and Sarah Connor

Welcome to The SciFi Podcast, a wretched hive of scum and villainy a bi-weekly podcast focused on in-depth discussions of all things science fiction. The SciFi Podcast features four hosts—Mattroid, Solo, Nick and Station!—and frequent guests. Each episode we look at a science fiction theme or franchise and take the discussion where no show has gone before.

WE ARE BACK. That’s right. After months off, yours at The Sci-Fi Podcast have opened their cryochambers and have begun to thaw. With the first 50 episodes (and numerous unnumbered episodes to boot) released, it was time to end season one and head into season two. This is episode five.

2019 is shaping up to be an incredible year for television and movies. We’ve experienced the end of the Marvel Infinity Saga, we’ll see the undoubtedly emotional close to the Skywalker Saga, Alien turned 40 and much, much more. In this episode we discuss the return of two storied franchises: Star Trek and Terminator.

Seventeen years after the final film in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series, Jean-Luc Picard returns in Star Trek: Picard, on CBS All Access. At this time we have very little to go on, but a newly released trailer has ignited the flames of deep space nerdness and you better believe your hosts are all about it.

Terminator made a fairly milquetoast comeback in 2015 with Terminator: Genisys. Arnie made his return as the titular character but sadly that wasn’t enough for fans to rally for, and the franchise appeared to be doomed. But! James Cameron wasn’t about to let that happen. Later this year we’ll welcome the return of Sarah Connor and the Terminator, and the buzz is certainly buzzing.

Disney Plus. X-Men – Phoenix. Random verbal nonsense.
Based on a season-one segment called “While You Were In the Cryochamber”, where the hosts discuss recent life events, Cryochamber episodes aim to emulate that segment while giving ample time to each host so they can discuss topics of their respective choosing.
In Cryochamber 1, Nick talks Disney Plus, the highly-anticipated streaming service; it’s awesome to hear Nick’s excitement on this. Station! exposes her inner Extreme Nerd and goes full Comic Book Guy on X-Men and The Phoenix, in preparation for the upcoming movie. Mattroid basically plays referee and offers virtually nothing outside of evaluating actor Doug Jones in five words.

Will there be changes? Yes there will be, and you’ll learn all about them both in this episode and the one following, but what’s most important for now are the following things:

* We have a new co-host and his name is Nick. He’s a big person with a big heart and equally large sized brain. He will be a lot of fun and provides some excellent and unique perspectives as well.

*Episodes will be shorter. Expect a tighter overall structure.

*We will be covering less newly released content in favor of properties that have been around for a little while. More on this as we release episodes.

*Our episodes are now EXPLICIT. Not horribly so, but you’ve been warned.

SLC FanX 2019.

The audio quality suffers quite badly in some places (so sorry!) but the content is incredible and, especially in conjunction with the pictures below, you’ll get a pretty good idea of the goings-on at Alien Con.

Show Notes:

William worked really hard on this production. The edits were abysmally difficult, the swears plentiful, the content barely salvageable, and the number of tracks numerous. Yet it sounds great. Find out more about William’s wonderful project The Villa and tell your friends do to the same.

The Magic Word will get you a SCI-Fi tee!

Thank you for joining us for 50 episodes and many extras over the past few years. We love and appreciate each of you.

The Sci-Fi Podcast: IT CAME FROM PLANET X – Weird Science

Some movies are so strange, so bizarre, so ultimately excellent that they belong in their own pocket universe of The Sci-Fi Podcast, known as Planet X! Mattroid will be joined in each of these short episodes by a special guest and together they’ll discuss a relatively unknown movie and any number of related (and unrelated) tangents.

The big 50 is almost here! Episode 50, nearly finished in the editing room, is almost live. Until then you’ve got something to hold you over. This episode’s guest is the subtle, quiet-yet-hilarious Zach Merris. The reason Zach was chosen for this Planet X episode is because Zach is an 80s comedy aficionado, huge John Hughes fan, and 80s era music enthusiast – but he doesn’t know crap about sci-fi movies. It was also his first time watching this movie, which just so happens to rate as one of Mattroid’s all-time-favorite 80s AND sci-fi films – WEIRD SCIENCE.

Have you seen it?

Chat about the movie in the comments section.

There’s a big episode coming up, so until then make sure to check out our friends and family at Movie Podcast Network.

Podcast production and artwork by Mattroid. Music provided by TMMC.

RATINGS:

Mattroid – 8.5/10

Zach – 7/10
